Eligibility Rules 2012
The Rye Little League invites children born between May 1, 1999 and April 30, 2004 to play in the Minor League, Intermediate League or Major League during the 2011 Spring Season. Please carefully read this registration form. Parents or guardians can register their child online at www.RyeLittleLeague.com.
Registration is December 1, 2011 - January 31,2012. This allows enough time to recruit coaches, order uniforms and schedule fields.
Once registration closes, applications for players aged 8-11 will require a late fee of $75, will be subject to a wait list and openings may not occur. Late applications for 12 year olds will be put on a wait list; openings are extremely unlikely.
The fee for the Spring Season is $160 for the first player in a family and $120 each for any additional players. This amount will include the purchase of a uniform (shirt, pants and hat), which you will keep. Confidential scholarships are available—please email Myles Lavelle (
).
Even if you played last year you must register to play in 2012.
ELIGIBILITY:
1) You must reside within the city limits of the City of Rye, not just within zip code 10580. Attendance in a Rye school does not qualify participation. Ownership of property or payment of taxes in Rye does not qualify for participation. The legal domicile ("residence" as defined by Little League official rule book) must be within the city limits of Rye.
2) You must be at least 8 years old on April 30, 2012. For those born after April 30, 2004, there will be a Baseball Program run by Rye Recreation with a sign-up in March. Little League International sets the dates for Little League participation. You must have been born after April 30, 1999.
3) A Birth Certificate or passport must be on file before a player is eligible. If this is your first year in Rye Little League, you must send a photocopy of a Legal Birth Certificate or a Passport to: Matt Anderson 149 Theall Road Rye, NY 10580 or an emailed copy to
. A Birth Certificate or passport must be on file before a player is eligible.
4)If a player does not attend at least 50 percent of his or her games, Rye Little League can prohibit the player from participation the following year.
5)Participation in the Spring Season is required for registration in the Summer or Fall Seasons.
SCHEDULE:
1) Practices will begin in mid-March and the regular season will conclude by the end of June. Generally teams play one weekday evening game and one Saturday game each week, although Major League teams may play three games in certain weeks. Major and Intermediate rain outs will be played on Sundays.
2) Rye will field a tournament team in each of the Major League and Intermediate League levels after the local season ends. These teams will be selected by the Board of Rye Little League based upon player and coach voting and will compete during July and August in their respective Little League World Series Tournaments. Only 11-year-old players in the Major League will be eligible for the 11-year-old Tournament team; 11 year old players in the Intermediate League are not eligible for the Tournament team.
TRYOUTS:
All eligible players who register on time will play Little League baseball in one of the three leagues:Majors, Intermediates, Minors (i.e., there are no cuts).
A player’s age on April 30, 2012 is his or her Little League age for all seasons this year (spring, summer and fall). Players may not necessarily be playing on the same team as last year.
-
All 8- and 9-year-olds will play in the Minor League.
-
This year the 10 year old players are welcome to try out for the Majors. If not selected they will play in the Intermediate League. It is not mandatory for 10 year old players to tryout. However if a 10 year old player cannot make the tryout but would like to be eligible for the draft they MUST LET US KNOW BEFORE THE TRYOUTS.
-
Players who are 11-years-old must attend the 20-minute tryout to be drafted onto a Major League team
-
If an 11-year-old tries out and is not selected in the Majors he/she will play for the Intermediate League.
-
Depending upon registrations, more than half of the 11-year-olds will play in the Intermediate League while some will play in the Major League. Selections to the Major League are made via a "draft" by the Major League teams. Selection is based on prior League play, athletic ability, and baseball skills at the tryout. While 11-year-old players are sometimes initially disappointed if they don’t make a Major League team, most find that the Intermediate League experience is very rewarding with more playing time than they would have in the Major League and a chance to play positions they would not be able to play in the Major League.
-
Players who are 12-years-old and who are new to the Majors or new to Rye Little League need to try out. This helps assess the players and insure they are drafted on an appropriate team.
-
All 12-year-olds play in the Major League.
-
Players who were in the Majors last year do not need to attend a tryout.
Refunds: If a refund is requested before teams are assigned a check will be issued from RLL in the amount of registration minus $10 convenience charge. (Processing with a Purpose will not issue refunds.) After teams are assigned, requests for refunds will need the Boards consideration of the situation. (Again Processing with a Purpose will not issue refunds.)

posted 01/03/2012 Parents, Coaches and Players,
As we move into the new year I wanted to take a moment to reflect back on two people who had a huge impact on Rye Little League and if not for their hard work and selfless attitude Rye Little League would not be the successful program it is today.
Sadly, Joan Mary Dempsey and John Patrick Casey passed away in 2011, both Joan and John touched so many people and had a positive impact on the Rye community.
Joan Dempsey was a pillar in the community, her relentless pursuit to help others did not go unnoticed. Joan and her husband Edward spent decades volunteering their time for Rye Little League from organizing the parade to coaching to working the concession stand; they were always available to help.
John Casey was a former President of Rye Little League and his infectious positive attitude carried over to anyone who met him. John was known as an ambassador for the kids; if the kids weren't having fun and smiling then Rye Little League was failing. John loved to coach and he had one team rule - EVERYONE had to have fun and smile - he's fun loving attitude was something he'll always be remembered for.
I had the privilege of knowing Joan Dempsey and John Casey, their unselfish ways, upbeat personality and peaceful demeanor will surely be missed but their impact on the Rye community will never be forgotten.
Regards
Myles Lavelle
Joan Mary Dempsey, a longtime resident of Rye, NY passed away peacefully on September 29, 2011 at age 84 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. The daughter of Alfred and Kathleen Brown, Joan married the love of her life, Edward T. Dempsey, on November 29, 1947 at Resurrection Church in Rye.
Born in The Bronx, NY on March 6, 1927, she moved to Rye in her youth, and graduated from Rye High School. During World War II, she worked at New York Telephone, and later worked at C.M. Almy on Purchase Street.
Joan was a wonderful daughter, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always active in the Rye community and Resurrection Church. She loved spending time with her husband of over 63 years, watching her children participate in school events and sporting activities. Joan enjoyed swimming and continued to swim at Durland, the Rye YMCA and Rye Golf Club until the disease prohibited her.
Joan was very active volunteering to help others through numerous activities in the community and the church including service as a long-time Eucharistic Minister, visiting the sick and as a volunteer at the Resurrection Blood Bank. While her children were in school, Joan served as a class mother and as PTA President at Resurrection Academy. Joan was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. As a member of the Rye Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Joan took great pride in helping to host the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Field Day at Rye Rec. Joan volunteered with her husband for decades working the Rye Little League Parade. She played third base on the inaugural Rye Ryots in the Rye Women's Softball League. After retirement, and when not at one of her children's or grandchildren's games, Joan and Ed loved to travel with Hawaii being their favorite destination. Together with many friends, she was a longtime member of the Rye Seniors Association.
Joan is survived by her husband: Edward, two daughters: Patricia Berry (Len) and Maureen Moeller (Carl), three sons: Sean (Cecelia), Brian (Lisa), and Terence (Jacki), ten grandchildren: Michael (Erika), Colleen Foster (Jason), Steven, Christopher, Matthew, Theodore, Gregory, Andrew, Jeffrey and Lauren and three great grandchildren: Michael, Shayna and August as well as two brothers, Alfred and Rev. Patrick (John) Brown. Joan was predeceased by her son, Kevin, infant daughter, Eileen Mary and sister, Adrienne Hagele.
Joan will be dearly missed by her extended family and the Rye community.
John Patrick Casey, died yesterday at Greenwich (CT) Hospital, at the age of 66, surrounded by family and friends. He was born June 5, 1945 in New York City and was raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. John was the quintessential fun-loving Irishman, known for his upbeat gregarious personality. He was beloved by his countless friends from all walks of life. John was the former CFO of the B. Altman and Co. and current CFO of the Altman Foundation. John was a long-time devoted member of the Union League Club, serving as President for three years. He also was an enthusiastic, dedicated Commissioner of the Rye Little League. He was a popular member of the Westchester Country Club where he excelled on the golf course with his unorthodox but effective swing. He also was a proud member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Rye Fish and Game Club, the ULC Trap and Skeet Team, and a revered member of the legendary "PotatoeHeads". John and his brother, Roger, were Irish step-dancing champions in their youth. He was a former board member of St. Agnes Hospital and LaSalle Academy, and a current board member of Lincoln Hall. John was a proud veteran of the Army's "Fighting 69th". John is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Kathy, his daughter Erin and her husband Brian Appleton, his son Sean, his beloved grandson Reed, and his brother Roger's family: Gail, Carolyn, Andrew, Maggie, Nora and Kevin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 9th at 10 AM at Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. Family will receive visitors at Graham Funeral Home from 4 PM to 8 PM on Thursday, December 8th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma

posted 11/29/2011 Dear Parents,
I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving and you are all looking forward to a happy and healthy holiday season. I am writing to inform you of a change the Rye Little League Board recently approved for the Major League 2012 season.
Rye Little League has adopted an ALL WOOD BAT rule for the Majors (11 and 12 year old league) starting this spring. Intermediate and Minor Leagues will still be allowed to use aluminum bats based on two criteria 1) type of baseballs used and 2) lack of speed and velocity generated from pitched balls does not create a dangerous situation.
Although Little League International allows aluminum bats, the Rye Little League Board decided in the best interest of protecting the players to move to an all wood bat league and eliminate aluminum bats.
Our decision was based on recent injuries (some severe) sustained by pitchers in our league from a batted ball off an aluminum bat. We believe the ball speed off an aluminum bat is significantly higher than a ball off a wood bat; hence putting the pitcher in a dangerous situation. The safety of the children comes first and we believe it is in the best interest of the league to remove aluminum bats from the major league.
I understand many of you have already purchased equipment in past year, however it is not worth the risk to our children. Furthermore, I wanted to make you aware of the change before you do your holiday shopping.
As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me at myles.lavelle@verizon.net. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the diamond in the coming months.
Sincerely
Myles Lavelle
President of Rye Little League
